Manchester, Liverpool ve Gölgelerindeki Birmingham

Birleşik Krallık ve müzik denince ilk akla gelen şehirler Manchester ve Liverpool oluyor. Heavy Metal müziğin doğduğu, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Led Zeppelin’in yarısı, Electric Light Orchestra ve Duran Duran gibi müzik devlerinin çıktığı Birmingham ise ne yazık ki bu iki şehrin gölgesinde kalıyor.

Modern müziği şekillendiren şehirlerden Liverpool, 1960’larda The Beatles ve Merseybeat akımıyla sahneye çıkarken, Manchester, post-punk, Britpop ve alternatif rock’ın merkezi haline geldi. Birbirinden sadece 56 km uzaklıkta bulunan bu iki şehir, Britanya müziğinin evrimine yön vererek öne çıktı.

Manchester, Liverpool, and Birmingham in Their Shadow
When talking about the United Kingdom and music, the first cities that come to mind are Manchester and Liverpool. However, Birmingham, the birthplace of heavy metal and home to legendary bands like Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, and half of Led Zeppelin, as well as Electric Light Orchestra and Duran Duran, has unfortunately remained in the shadow of these two cities.

Among the cities that shaped modern music, Liverpool emerged in the 1960s with The Beatles and the Merseybeat movement, while Manchester became the center of post-punk, Britpop, and alternative rock. Located just 56 km apart, these two cities stood out by leading the evolution of British music.

“In 1969, we wrote our first song, Wicked World, at The Railway Pub in Birmingham. We only had one chance, and the pub owner was not very fond of our loud music. Our song, which spoke of the dark and grim aspects of life, had absolutely nothing to do with the trendy ‘Flower Children’ and their music of the time:

The world today is such a wicked place
Fighting going on between the human race
People go to work just to earn their bread
While people just across the sea are counting their dead.

Decoding Birmingham

Birmingham. The industrial and musical city of the United Kingdom, where the first fire of the Industrial Revolution burned, where the Watt Steam Engine was invented, where many fields of science such as physics, chemistry and biology flourished and where many genres of music emerged including heavy metal. It is a city to which I feel an unusual feeling of belonging, where I followed the footsteps of John Ronald Reuel Tolkien, the greatest storyteller of all time, linguist and literary figure, creator of the legendary Lord of the Rings myth, who grew up in Birmingham and created an entire mythology.

HEAVY METAL MÜZİĞİN PEŞİNDE: BIRMINGHAM GÜNLÜKLERİ 1

Birmingham’ı Anlamak

Birmingham. Sanayi Devriminin ilk ateşinin yandığı, Watt buhar makinasının icat edildiği (fizik, kimya, biyoloji gibi pek çok bilim dalının yeşerdiği), heavy metal müziğin yanı sıra pek çok başka janrada müziğin ortaya çıktığı Birleşik Krallığın sanayi ve müzik şehri. Garip ve çok somut bir bağ ile bağlı olduğum, sokaklarında gelmiş geçmiş en büyük masalcı Tolkien’in izlerini sürdüğüm, efsanevi Yüzüklerin Efendisi mitinin yaratıcısı dilbilimci ve edebiyatçı John Ronald Reuel Tolkien’in büyüdüğü, yarattığı mitolojiye esin kaynağı olmuş şehir.
Ekim ayında Birmingham’da Birmingham Music Archive kurucusu ve direktörü Jez Collins ile bir araya geldik. Sanayi haricinde şehri tanımlayan en önemli bileşenlerden biri olan müziği konuştuk.

JUDAS PRIEST İSTANBUL PARK ORMAN KONSERİ

Nereden başlasam.. Hah.. 2008 “Judas Priest” konseri Kuruçeşme Arena. Hayatımda katıldığım ilk Judas konseri. Aylar öncesinden sahne önü biletlerimizi almıştık, planlar yapılmıştı, hazırlıklar tamamdı. Efsaneler efsanesi, belki en sevdiğim grup “Iron Maiden”ın bile ilham kaynaklarından “Judas Priest” ve tabiki Rob Halford İstanbul’a geliyordu. Kuruçeşme Arena denize nazır çok güzel bir alandı.

JUDAS PRIEST INVINCIBLE SHIELD

Judas Priest heavy metal grubu 1969 yılında Birmingham’da kuruldu. Heavy metal tanrıları olarak adlandırılan Judas Priest 1974 yılında ilk albümü Rocka Rolla’yı çıkardı. Bu albüm sayesinde Judas Priest turneye çıkmış ve tüm dünyada tanınmaya başlamıştır.
